Brevort

By Lois Movalson 292-5581

Trinity Lutheran Church in Brevort will celebrate its 100th anniversary in June, 2010, and I hope to periodically have old pictures published during the year. Today’s column features the Sunday school class of 1946, standing in front of the church. Rose Ellen Movalson and Jennie Matson were the teachers.

Al Sanborn visited with Tracy Movalson last week.

While shopping in Petoskey last week, Dave and I happened to meet Billy Milford, Lucy Evashevski, and Michael Evashevski, who were coming from Forest Evashevski’s funeral. Michael lives and works in New York City for an ad agency. He pointed out one of the advertising posters hanging on the wall as one from his agency.

Anne Anderson is spending time at the family home this week. Making apple sauce and apple butter is on the agenda. It was a good apple year in the village.

Dave, Tracy, and I attended the memorial fireworks display for George Litzner and Pete Peters in Moran Saturday evening, November 7. Chili and hot dogs went well with the silent auction and the fireworks. The fireworks were courtesy of Art and Robin (nee Peters) Bahr, who own their own pyrotechnics company. Trish Litzner was honored with a waterfall display. It was a mild evening. We had time to visit with friends we don’t often see. The Brevort Township Fire Department was present with the fire engine.

Joe and Sharon Chalmers returned home from a weekend trip to Appleton, Wisconsin.

Dave and I received a phone call from Sue Flora Kanour Sunday evening, November 8. Sue and her husband, Bill, live in Ewe Beach, Hawaii. Aside from her broken foot, she and Bill are doing fine.

The wrecking crew is working everyday on demolishing Clearwater Resort on Shore Road in Brevort. The resort is on the former Mike Gustafson property of the early 1900s era. It was a commercial fishing enterprise, carried on by Ted and Rueben Gustafson in later years. Happy Hanks Dude Ranch was a popular vacationing place there in the 1950s. In 1977 the original farmhouse burned to the ground. Carl and Beth Avery then built the building that is now being torn down. They operated it as a dude ranch and catered to the snowmobile trade in the winter. There is a lot of history in this little village of Brevort.

Betty Giordani has finished her seasonal work at Harbor Light Motel in St. Ignace. She and Gio are busy painting their home a lovely shade of colonial blue.

Dottie Glashaw attended the Star Line dinner at a restaurant in Mackinaw City Saturday evening, November 7.

Lara, Mike, Kristi, and Morgan Gustafson cheered for Zachary Lasley’s hockey team at the Bridge Brawl Saturday, November 7. Zach’s team came in first. Zach was named Most Valuable Player, and it was his birthday. It couldn’t be better than that.

Sarah Campbell has accepted a full scholarship at the University of New Hampshire. Congratulations, Sarah. She is the daughter of April and Steve Campbell and the granddaughter of Tom and Joyce Gustafson.

Kathy Reid connected with a deer last week in Elk Rapids. There was quite a bit of damage to her car, so the car is in a collision shop.

Lee Foster stopped by for a visit Sunday afternoon, November 8. He is enjoying his vacation time at the home of his parents, Jack and Thora Shepard. Lee is employed at a resort in the Grand Marais area during the tourist season. Melissa Foster of Canton, Ohio, was also home for a surprise visit to the Shepards. Jack and Thora drove to Traverse City last week.

Continuing get well wishes to Mary Carney, who is a patient at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

Happy birthday to Jim Dyer November 15, Jim Rogers November 19, Cheryl Matelski November 20, and Sharkey Movalson November 21.
