DeTour High School and Middle School bands performed their first concert of the season, and everyone agreed that band director Gordon Usher and the students are working hard and performing at a high level. The audience this time consisted primarily of parents and members of the Community Choir. The next concerts will be the holiday programs Tuesday, December 15, in DeTour Village and Wednesday, December 16, on Drummond Island.

Computers in DeTour Elementary School are outdated and 14 new computers at a cost of $562 each are needed to bring the department up to date, administrators report. The elementary parents’ group and teachers have agreed to purchase 10 machines with money from previous fundraisers and are looking for donations or help with fundraising for the remaining four. Anyone interested in donating or helping with fundraising may call Debbie Fountain at (906) 297-5024, or send a check to the DeTour School and indicate it is for DeTour Elementary School computers.

Construction has started on the new EDC information area at the turnaround at the edge of town. When completed, the structure will have a large bulletin board to announce community events and an area for businesses to place advertising brochures. The goal is to complete the structure before winter.

The DeTour Nutrition Center and the senior citizens who share lunch twice a week have created a new cookbook under the direction of Michelle Traynor. There are some wonderful recipes in the book, shared by many of the cooks in our area. Stop by the Village Hall to purchase a book or look for them at area businesses. It’s worth the purchase to get the great picture of Betty James and Bill Scott on the front cover.

Plans are underway for the annual Union Presbyterian Church bazaar and soup and dessert lunch in conjunction with the EUP Fine Arts Council Village Christmas. This traditional event features handmade items, cookies by the pound, and selections of soups.

A new Village Christmas event this year is the DeTour Passage Historical Society’s pancake breakfast to support the activities of the museum. Serving will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday, December 6, at the Village Hall and continues to 11 a.m.

Deer rifle season starts Sunday, November 15. Don’t forget the Blessing of the Hunters at the Village Inn Friday, November 13, at 7 a.m. Good luck to everyone who takes to the woods, and be careful.
