Former St. Ignace Resident
Breaks Cockroach Record
Sean Murphy, 27, a former student at Gros Cap School in Moran Township, says he unofficially broke a world record Friday, October 23, when he put 16 Madagascar hissing cockroaches in his mouth.
Mr. Murphy, now an employee at a pet store in Lansing, held the cockroaches in his mouth for 10 seconds, defeating the current world record of 11 cockroaches. He initially stopped at 12 cockroaches to wait the official 10 seconds, and then continued until he reached 16.
Mr. Murphy has contacted Guinness World Records and is awaiting a response, although he said he is confident that with press coverage and more than 100 spectators, they won't have trouble verifying the world record attempt.
"I mainly did it for publicity for the store's Halloween party," he said. "I have a pretty wonderful job and I wanted to do something to help it out."
After seeing the former world record of 11 cockroaches accomplished on video, Mr. Murphy said his first thought was that he could beat the record.
His parents are the late Patrick Murphy and Suzy Hartley, of St. Ignace, and his family living in the St. Ignace area include Margaret and Billy LaRocque and Bridget and Jim West.
