Chief Wawatam Scrapped
      The venerable old Chief Wawatam, which ferried trains and automobiles across the Straits of Mackinac for 73 years and which has been used as a barge for the past 21 years, is being scrapped, her 2,500 tons of steel to be sold.

Mackinac Bridge Traffic Spikes
Marks First Major Increase Since 1998
      The Mackinac Bridge has seen seven straight months of traffic numbers higher than in 2008, with 4.8% more traffic for the year and most recently a 0.6% traffic increase in October. The Mackinac Bridge Authority expects to end 2009 more than 4% higher than last year.

Cabin Break-ins Targeting Copper
      About 40 cabins, trailers, and seasonal homes have been broken into in Mackinac, Chippewa, and Luce counties over the past two months, many of which were stripped of their copper electrical wiring and plumbing. Because of the geography, timeline, and similarity of these break-ins, police are assuming the crimes are connected.
