Nancy Masse

Nancy Masse Nancy Masse Nancy Lee Masse, 70, of DeTour, was the owner and operator of a Hessel restaurant and was a successful poker player. Mrs. Masse died Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at her home.

She was born April 19, 1939, in Flint, the daughter of Lloyd Herman and Rose Erma (nee Oder) Clore. She grew up and was graduated from school in Gladwin.

She married Lawrence Leon “Duke” Masse July 13, 1957, in Gladwin, a wedding attended by nearly 1,000 well wishers. Over their happy life they lived in Bay City, Saginaw, Onaway, West Branch, and Las Vegas, Nevada, while their three children grew up. From 1988 to 1996, they owned and operated The Hessel Bay Inn Restaurant in Hessel. After they sold the restaurant, they moved to their current home in DeTour.

She enjoyed boating, snowmobiling, and camping. She was a very successful poker player, winning many tournaments where she earned her nickname “Nancy Fifth Street.” One year, after making her way through a series of qualifying tournaments, Mrs. Masse was invited to play in the World Poker Open with a $10,000 entry fee.

She is survived by her husband, Duke; one daughter, Laura Lynn Masse of Sterling; two sons and their families, Bradley Lawrence and Cynthia Masse of Spring Lake, and David Allen Masse of Cedarville; 11 grandchildren, Eric Hamel Masse, Steven Jay Masse, Jennifer Revard, Joseph Revard IV, Kelli Revard, Robert Mezzano, MaKenzi Alana Masse, Jama Friedel, Chad Friedel, Tyler Modzeleski, and Trevor Modzeleski; six great-grandchildren, Kobe, Saige, Jasmine, Kaius, Zaela, and Colton. She is also survived by two sisters, Carol Clore of Westland, and Rosanne Sedlarik of Albion; and two brothers and their families, Peter and Debbie Clore of Jackson, and Michael Clore of Battle Creek.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services were Friday, November 6, with visitation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford, followed by Mass at 3 p.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Hessel.
