All Guilty of Revisionist History

To the Editor:

In regard to the November 5 issue by Margaret Merriman on Goudreau Street and Maloney Hill: I was born on Goudreau back when Hilter was a corporal, and we always called it Maloney Hill. I never knew why. Church Street we always call the Convent Hill. I spent eight years with the nuns. I am still leery when I go to the zoo and see the penguins.

I would say that history is lies that are agreed to. Who discovered America in 1492? They say Columbus, but it wasn’t. It was the lookout in the crow’s nest up high on the mast when he yelled, “Land Ho.” Old Chris said, “Where away,” and the lookout yelled, “a little bit off of southeast Florida,” or something to that effect.

The most shown photograph of World War II is by Joe Rosenthal. He took the picture of the flag raising on Iwo Jima of Ira Hayes and John Bradley, but that wasn’t the first one. Some Marines raised a flag but it was too small to be seen from the battleships in the bay, so they ordered a bigger one. Rosenthal was there when they raised the second one, so I guess you would call it all revisionist history.

I worked for St. Ignace under Con Becker. We made those gutters out of cobblestone hauled from Coveyou’s hunting camp. Different nights after drinking in the Snake Pit, I can say I actually slept in the gutter on Maloney Hill.
