Preserve Local Control of Hydroelectric Plant

To the Editor:

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, Cloverland Electric Cooperative has reached an agreement to acquire Edison Sault Electric Company from its parent company, Wisconsin Energy Corporation. Pursuant to Michigan law, our board of directors has called a special meeting for Thursday, November 12, so current Cloverland members can learn about this proposed acquisition and vote to approve it.

There are several reasons why the board and I believe this transaction is in the best interests of all energy consumers in our region.

Without question, the most important of those reasons is preserving local control of Edison Sault’s hydroelectric plant. This historic facility has provided our region with clean, renewable, and affordable energy for decades.

Amid all the discussion we hear these days about climate change legislation and renewable portfolio standards, this plant is a highly desirable asset that many far-away companies would happily buy in a heartbeat.

This acquisition affords us the rare opportunity to ensure this plant is owned, controlled, and operated by “Yoopers” for decades to come.

In addition to preserving local control of the hydro plant, the efficiencies gained through this transaction should help promote longterm rate stability for consumers on both the Cloverland and Edison Sault systems.

Lastly, by combining the talents of the outstanding professionals at both companies, we’ll have a stronger team of more than 100 local people providing service.

If you have questions about this acquisition, please visit our Web site, www.cloverland.com, or give us a call at (800) 562-4953.

I hope current members of Cloverland Electric will join us November 12 to vote in favor of this outstanding opportunity to build a stronger cooperative and secure our energy future.
