Hunting Safety Tips
These safety tips for hunters have been provided by Mackinac County Sheriff Scott Strait:
• Carry hunting license and personal identification while hunting.
• All hunters must wear at least one item of "hunter orange" colored clothing on the outermost layer. The item must be visible from all sides. If it is a camouflage item, it much be at least 50% orange.
• Hunting hours begin at approximately one-half hour before sunrise and end one-half hour after sunset.
• Safety zones are all areas within 150 yards of an occupied building, house, cabin, barn, or other farm building. Hunters may not hunt in these areas unless written permission of the property owner is given.
• It is illegal to drink alcohol or use intoxicating drugs before hunting.
• Hunters should be familiar with the area they are hunting in as well as let someone know where they are hunting and when they will return.
• Carry extra batteries for global positioning and electronic navigation devices.
• Be aware of nearby hunters. Hunters should never assume they are alone.
• Never assume other hunters are acting responsibly.
• Hunters sitting against a rock or tree should make sure it is wider than their shoulders so they are not mistaken for a target.
• Be 100% sure of target before shooting.
