St. Ignace, Engadine, Brimley Defeated in Volleyball State Regionals

The St. Ignace Saints, Engadine Eagles, and Brimley Bays fell in the Michigan High School Athletic Association regional volleyball tournaments Tuesday, November 10.

St. Ignace: The Saints, competing in the Class C Iron Mountain regionals, were swept by the host Mountaineers 10-25, 17-25, and 13-25.

"We were nervous and didn't play our game," said Saints Coach Gracia Marshall. "Overall I was pleased with our season. We had an up and down year, but we were playing well at the end and won districts."

Saints statistics: Kali Jo Marshall, 45 assists, 11 good serves, one ace, eight spikes, five blocks; Dana Schieding, 15 good serves, 10 spikes, three digs; Lauren Winkelman, 22 good serves, three digs; Katy LaTour, 15 spikes, eight blocks, two good serves; Christi Therrian, 15 spikes, six blocks; Carissa Cowell, 35 assists, two spikes; Holly Smith, 25 assists, five spikes, five good serves; Mallory LaLonde, 15 good serves; Anna St. Andrew, 15 good serves, five spikes; Martina Beaudoin, five good serves, two spikes, one block.

The district regional game was the final volleyball contest for Dana Schieding, Katy LaTour, Kali Jo Marshall, Holly Smith, Amanda Dixon, Christi Therrian, and Mallory LaLonde.

Engadine: At North Dickinson, the Eagles lost to Hancock in the Class D regional, losing the first game 20-25. The team came back to win game two 25-17, but lost the next two to the Bulldogs 19-25 and 16-25.

"The difference between a win and a loss was Maria Alumquist, the 6'0" player from Hancock, whose serve reception and strong attack play allowed the Bulldogs to play more offense," said Eagles Coach Kathy Miller. "It has been a great year for the seniors, Elisa Hobb, Kayla Miller, Oyuna Gabbard, Leah Blanchard, and Lynzee Bigelow, who I will miss."

Eagles statistics: Elisa Hobbs, 15 kills, two aces, five digs, three block kills; Kayla Miller, 15 assists, four kills, three digs; Kacie Rutledge, 14 digs; Oyuna Gabbard, 10 digs; Lynzee Bigelow, three kills, one ace; Lacey Bigelow, five assists, one block kills; Morgan MacArthur, four digs; Katie Hobbs, two kills, one block kill; Kylie Swanson, two kills; Leah Blanchard, one kill. The Eagles served 94% in the five games.

The Eagles finished the season with a 26-10-2 overall record and shared the Easter Upper Peninsula Conference with Brimley at 7-1.

Brimley: The Bays hosted the Class D tournament at the Karl Parker Gymnasium and defeated Johannesburg-Lewiston Cardinals 25-12 in the first game, but then the Bays lost three consecutive games 13-25, 17-25, 16-25.

"I am pleased with our effort this season, with a co-championship in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference and winning the district crown," said Bays Coach Rhonda Amble. "The girls played hard all season and for the seniors it was a great experience."
