School in Deficit, 3 Laid Off
Cedarville District Must Report to State Education Dept.
      The technology coordinator and two teaching aides were laid off at Cedarville during the Monday, November 16, board of education meeting, some services will be outsourced, and citizens learned the district must report monthly to the state's education department as a result of adopting a 2009-2010 budget with a deficit fund balance of $65,337.

Les Cheneaux Old-fashioned Christmas
      Residents and visitors of Les Cheneaux will enjoy brightly lit trees, gingerbread houses, and contests during the Old-fashioned Christmas event taking place during two weekends, November 27 to November 29, and December 4 to December 6. The Old-fashioned Christmas is the brainchild of Rose Miller, who developed the idea to aid the economy and amplify the spirit of Christmas.

Remember the U.P.
      It has taken a new state law to ensure that the Upper Peninsula is included in any illustration, image, or depiction of Michigan produced by state departments and agencies. The bill was introduced by Representative Michael Lahti of Hancock and signed into law Thursday, November 19, by Governor Jennifer Granholm.

Hessel Citizens Say ‘No’ to Wind Turbine at Marina
      Residents of Hessel in attendance at the Clark Township Board of Trustees meeting Thursday, November 19, voiced a resounding "no" to the idea of a donated wind turbine to help mitigate energy costs at the Hessel Marina, but the windmill's propoment, Mike McMaken, said he would continue to work with the township to look at alternative energy sources that can save money.

      A lower-court ruling that a foundation for a new house be filled and covered has been upheld by the Michigan Court of Appeals, ending a 10-year battle by the City of Mackinac Island to get the owners either to complete the house or put the lot back to its natural state.

Mackinaw City Officials Learn About Open Meetings Act
      Mackinaw City public officials will be heading back to school in 2010. The village is planning a training session about the Open Meetings Act and public meeting procedures to take place sometime after the first of the year. Members of the Village Council, Planning Commission, economic development corporation, and other village public bodies are all encouraged to attend.
