Focus Will Be on 1890s for McGulpin Lighthouse Museum
      Creating an 1890s atmosphere in McGulpin Point Lighthouse is one of several plans that Jim Tamlyn, chairman of the Emmet County Board of Commissioners, has for the Mackinaw City destination. Mr. Tamlyn detailed his ideas during a speech made to the Mackinaw Area Historical Society Monday, November 9, at the Mackinaw Area Public Library.

Asian Carp Have Breached Electric Barrier, Tests Show
Invasive Species Threatens Great Lakes
      Conservation groups called for immediate measures to close all Illinois gateways and locks with access to Lake Michigan in a last-ditch effort to keep the destructive Asian carp from invading the Great Lakes after it was learned Friday, November 20, that carp have likely advanced past the electric barrier designed to keep them out and are present just six miles south of Lake Michigan.

      North Central Michigan College, based in Petoskey, will offer three college-level courses in St. Ignace starting January 18, 2010. The courses will be offered at LaSalle High School.

Appeals Court Upholds Samphere Case Decision
      The Michigan Court of Appeals upheld the conviction and sentencing of Kevin Samphere of St. Ignace November 10, ruling that he has been appropriately sentenced to 15 years in state prison in a 2006 child abuse case in which a four-year-old boy suffered burns in a bathtub of hot water at Mr. Samphere’s home.

Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Offer Bridge Tower Raffle
      The Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association is selling raffle tickets for a tower tour of the Mackinac Bridge for two people. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $5 each or five for $20 at the association's office in Mackinaw City at 707 North Huron Avenue, or at the Web site, www.gllka.com/store/index.htm .

Curtis Community Begins Holiday Celebrations Friday
Tree Lighting, Santa Claus Parade Planned
      Curtis will begin the holiday season with “Curtis Aglow” Friday, November 27, at 6 p.m. with a Santa Claus parade and tree lighting in Curtis. The festivities will continue Saturday, November 28, with a Christmas Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Erickson Center. There will be crafts, bake sales, raffles, and a visit from Santa.

Fort de Buade Works To Save Artifacts From Pests
      Fort de Buade history museum is getting some upgraded flooring in its main display section and protection for its artifacts and storage cases from wood-boring inset larva. The Michilimackinac Historical Society is spending $3,950 on the project, which was approved by the St. Ignace Fort de Buade Committee September 30.

New Weather Equipment Coming to Island Airport
      A new weather reporting system will be installed next summer at the Mackinac Island Airport, one of a number of improvements planned for the facility that include pavement and crack repair, repainting line markings, and additional tree removal from the east and west runway approaches.

      Eleven direct descendants and their families of Ambrose and Susan Davenport of Mackinac Island visited the Davenport home Monday, October 12, on the Island. The Davenport house was one of the older two-story log cabins built in Michigan. It was built in 1805.

County Jail Will Get New Carpet
      The Mackinac County Board of Commissioners, meeting Thursday, November 12, accepted a bid from Superior Floor Covering of St. Ignace for 123 square yards of carpeting to be installed in the sheriff's office. Superior was the lowest of two bids at $2,680, while the other bid from Everson's Home Furnishings of St. Ignace and Newberry was $4,158.

      Splitting from the four-county district health department may not be such a good idea for Mackinac County, Commission Chair Dawn Nelson is now saying. She told other commissioners at a meeting Monday, November 23, that she is not sure that splitting from the Luce, Mackinac, Alger, Schoolcraft (LMAS) District Health Department would be in the best interest of Mackinac County.
