3 College Courses Will Be Offered in St. Ignace

College Partners With Great Waters Center

North Central Michigan College, based in Petoskey, will offer three college-level courses in St. Ignace starting January 18, 2010. The courses will be offered at LaSalle High School.

“Communications 170 - Interpersonal Communication” will be Mondays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. Designed to develop communication skills in the context of interpersonal relationships, small groups, and society as a whole, course will include writing, speaking, collaborative and independent learning, role playing, independent research, and written reports.

“English 111 – English Composition I” will be Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 8:20 p.m. The course emphasizes language skills, particularly essay writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Reading and writing are explored in the general categories of description, narration, exposition, argumentation, and writing on demand.

“Business 161 - Introduction to Business” will be Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. The course will introduce students to business topics, activities, and problems, including capitalism, communism, socialism, the stock market, bond market, banking, insurance, management, labor relations, accounting, and business ethics.

Courses are part of the general education curriculum at North Central and are transferable to other colleges and universities. Registration requires enrollment in North Central. Students should go to the college’s Web site, www.ncmich.edu, and click on the Student and Community Portal to register. Registration begins Wednesday, November 18, and continues through January 15.

To offer the classes, the college is partnering with the Great Waters Center for Lifelong Learning, an initiative in St. Ignace that seeks to bring college courses, GED, vocational training, and community enrichment programs to the area.
