Cedarville Teachers Share Project Requests With Donors

2009-11-26 / News

People can contribute online to a fundraising campaign to purchase digital cameras for Joanna Izzard’s 11th grade class at Cedarville High School. The online education charity DonorsChoose.org is highlighting the project that will provide extracurricular resources and experiences for 25 students.

Civics materials, a storage trolley for nap mats, science books, and storage bags are also among project requests sought for classrooms at the school. The Cedarville teachers making the requests are among tens of thousands of teachers across the country who are turning to DonorsChoose.org to get learning materials for their students.

Many of the project requests posted on the site, including Mrs. Izzard’s, will be aided by a $4.1 million grant in 2008 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support teachers who aim to promote college-readiness among students in high-need urban and rural public schools.

Art students will use the cameras to create compositions, and yearbook and journalism students will use them to help create layouts and develop page designs, Mrs. Izzard said.

Individual donors can contribute any dollar amount to these and other projects posted on the donation site. One a project is completely funded, a team at the site will purchase the requested materials and send them to the teacher. All donors will receive photographs of the project taking place, a thank-you letter from the teacher, and a cost report showing how each dollar was spent. Donors who give more than $100 will also receive handwritten thank-you letters from the students.

Any public school teacher can post a project. Projects aimed at college-readiness in high-need or rural high schools may be eligible for the Double Your Impact match.
