Marvin Winkelman, 91, was named Kiwanian of the Year at an annual dinner of the St. Ignace Kiwanis Club Tuesday, November 10. Mr. Winkelman, a member of the club for 58 years, was recognized for his faithful attendance at every meeting and club event and for his longtime service.
Mr. Winkelman is one of the two remaining charter members of the Kiwanis Club, with Prentiss “Moie” Brown, Jr. Earlier this year, Mr. Winkelman was also honored for 70 years of service to the St. Ignace Masonic Lodge. A longtime St. Ignace businessman, he has been active in many community causes and civic organizations.
“No matter what his health is, he’s always there, and he is just so giving,” said Kiwanis Club treasurer Lori Strich.

Also in attendance was longtime club member Larry Rubin, 96.
Ms. Strich earned the Kiwanis Club Spark Plug Award. The attendance award was shared by Janet Peterson and Mr. Brown.
Jim Balfour earned the President’s Award for his willingness to take over new projects as people have retired from them or moved away.
David Garland, Division 222 Lieutenant Governor for Kiwanis Club, installed this year’s slate of officers at the banquet at Fred’s Pub in St. Ignace. Mike Lane is president of the club, John Monville is vice president, Lori Strich is treasurer, and Janet Peterson and Kathy McLeod are secretaries.
Fred Feleppa, Ernie Krause, Jean Massaway, Jennifer McGraw, Darcy McLean, John Ruegg, and Dave Schmidt serve on the board of directors.
The club presented $566.50 raised through a whitefish dinner to the school band program for new uniforms. Club members contribute Happy Dollars at meetings throughout the year, and this year $192 in collections will be donated to Legacy House..
