Donald Patrick
Donald Lynn Patrick, 89, of Cedarville, was a World War II veteran who also played professional baseball for the Detroit Tigers and became an Upper Peninsula businessman. Mr. Patrick died Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.
He was born November 13, 1920, in Cedarville to Curtis Lonzo and Elizabeth S. (nee Welch) Patrick.
Mr. Patrick grew up in Cedarville, and was graduated from Cedarville schools in 1938. In 1939, he began playing professional baseball for the Detroit Tigers. He stopped in 1940 to enter the United States Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He married Joan Gail Kushner November 11, 1944, in Detroit. In 1950, he became the golf pro at Plymouth Country Club and then worked in sales for automotive tool and die and electronics until 1970. In 1970, he and his wife moved to Cedarville, where they owned and operated Patrick's Restaurant and in 1980, Patrick's Wool and Down. In 1985, they moved their clothing store to Newberry, where it remained until they retired. They returned to Cedarville in 1997.
He was one of the last living grandchildren of William and Mary Patrick, who came from Canada in 1866 and settled at what was known as Patrick's Landing in Cedarville.
Mr. Patrick was a former member of the Masons and the Elks.
He loved golfing, hunting, and following professional baseball and golf.
He is survived by three sons and their families, Lynn and Mary Patrick of Traverse City, Michael and Diane Patrick and Robert and Marva Patrick, all of Cedarville; eight grandchildren and their families, Sean Curtis Patrick, Kurt and Tanya Patrick, Jared Patrick, Nathan Patrick, Dillon and Stacy Patrick, Alyssa and Andy Vallier, Julie and Carl McCready Jr., and Scott Graul, and seven great-grandchildren, Darian Patrick, Hazel Vallier, Kayla Patrick, Heather Patrick, Brian Patrick, Alex McCready, and Chase McCready.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; four brothers, Raymond, Thomas, Marshall, and Nyle Patrick, and two sisters, Adelaide Baker and Genevieve Taylor.
A memorial will be Saturday, December 5, at 11 a.m. at Hessel Presbyterian Church.
