Moran Twp. Will Install Streetlight at Spring and Fourth St.

The location of seven commercial gravel pits was pinpointed in a survey and submitted to the Moran Township Board of Trustees Wednesday, December 2. The board also approved the installation of a streetlight at the intersection of Spring and Fourth streets.

The township did not know the exact location of the gravel pits on the parcels of land before the survey. If commercial gravel pit owners open additional pits outside of the identified parcels they own, they will be subject to the Transitional Use ordinance passed in 2004. The seven gravel pits were active before the enactment of the Transitional Use zoning ordinance, and were grandfathered in during the summer, Supervisor Jim Durm said. Grandfathering makes them exempt from zoning requirements such as reporting the amount of gravel removed from the pits or providing a performance bond.

The board approved the installation of a new streetlight at the intersection of Spring and Fourth streets. The intersection is barely inside bounds of Moran Township, the board noted, but is the township's responsibility.

The streetlight installation was spurred by complaints the intersection is very dark and many children pass by there while walking home from school. The light will cost an estimated $2,500, Mr. Durm said, and plans are to install it by the end of the year, weather permitting.
