Shirley Ozak, 93, of Hessel, died Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care in St. Ignace.
She was born September 16, 1916, in Detroit, to Reginald and Pearl Gladys (nee Williams) Teetzel. When her mother died, she was adopted as a young child by her mother's sister, Ada Bomerscheim.
Ms. Ozak grew up in the Detroit area and earned a bachelor’s degree at Central Michigan University. She was an art teacher for many years and during that time worked toward her master’s degree.
She married Amos Shoberg in 1946 and he died in a boating accident in 1954.
In 1956, she married Louis Ozak and they lived in Mackinaw City, Tawas, Ann Arbor, and St. Ignace. Mrs. Ozak has made her home in Hessel since Mr. Ozak died in 1994.
She was a member of the Warren Sorority. After attending the Christian Science Church as a child, she attended the Catholic Church, Baptist Church, and most recently, First Union Church in Cedarville.
She was a faithful volunteer at theCedar Post Thrift Shop. She continued her interest in art and over the years, she painted scenery paintings but mostly she liked drawing. Until just recently, she continued to make pencil drawings even while living in long term care. Friends said Mrs. Ozak was a thoughtful, caring person who learned the name of everyone she met and always remembered it.
She is survived by three sistersin law and their families, Sadie and Richard Nye of Cedarville, Marlene and Richard Bour of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, and Vi Ozak of Cedarville; dear friends and caregivers Marge and Jud Brown of Cedarville; nieces and nephews and their families, Dick and Donna Nye of Hessel, Debbie and Scott Showers of San Antonio, Texas, Jessica Showers of Orlando, Florida, Hilary Showers of San Antonio, Sharon and Leland Daily of Kingston, Jeri Ozak of Traverse City, Marcia Ozak Heileman of Traverse City, Nancy Ozak of Hudsonville, Anne and John Hogarth of Traverse City, Gayla and Joe Brief of Traverse City, David Simmons of Traverse City, Dan and Gail Simmons of Renton, Washington, Paul and Dena Bour of Bethel Park, Barbara and Carl Hanna of Pickford, LynDean and Darryle Bosley of Traverse City, Steve and Debbie Thompson of Pickford, Don and Trenda Thompson of Denver, Colorado, Tom and Marcia Mitchell of Monument, Colorado, Bob and Joan Mitchell of Holly Springs, North Carolina, and Gary and Francis Shoberg of Palm Harbor, Florida, and cousins, Al Teetzel, Dan and Joan Teetzel, Barbara Drake and Fred Miller.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Bomerscheim; two brothers-in-law, Jake Ozak and Oren Shoberg, and three sisters-inlaw, Ruby Shoberg Geoffrion, Lelia Shoberg Thompson, and Bertha Shoberg Mitchell.
Services were Monday, December 7, at First Union Church in Cedarville. Visitation was from noon to 2 p.m. with the funeral at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery in Cedarville.
