Search Ends for Missing Woman
A search for a missing 24-yearold woman in the Straits of Mackinac was called off by the U.S. Coast Guard early Saturday, December 12, after three hours without results. The woman is reported to be from the Mount Pleasant area. Her car was found on the Mackinac Bridge shortly after 3 a.m.
Both a U. S. Coast Guard helicopter from Traverse City and the 47 foot motor life boat from Station St. Ignace were used in the search, but no body was found, Juan Avila, a public information officer from Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, told The St. Ignace News.
"We searched for three-plus hours on the east and west side of the bridge," he said. "We exhausted our resources and suspended the case."
Mr. Avila said the Coast Guard could not determine if there was a fatality.
Neither the Mackinac Bridge Authority or Michigan State Police would comment on the matter.
Executive Secretary Robert Sweeney said the MBA's policy is to not report or release any information about incidents that may involve suicide on the bridge.
