Mackinac Island Splits Hoops Games With Put-in-Bay

The Mackinac Island boys and girls basketball teams made a trip to South Bass Island, Ohio, to battle Put-in-Bay High School Friday, December 11. The Lakers boys won their match-up 56-53 in overtime, but the girls team lost to the Panthers 39-31.
Lakers Boys Win
The Lakers led 16-14 after the first eight minutes and held a 15-14- scoring edge in the second quarter for a 31-28-halftime lead.
The Panthers outscored the Lakers 13-9 in the third quarter to take a 41-40 offensive edge into the fourth quarter.
In the final eight minutes, Mackinac Island sent the game into overtime with a 7-6 margin as Todd Fridline made one free throw in the closing minute of play.
Thomas Rilenge, who led the Lakers with game high 30 points, fouled out in the overtime and Paul Fisher went to the bench with five fouls in the fourth quarter.

Tymon Horn answered with eight points in the extra four minutes and Fridline chipped in one to ice the win for the Lakers.

The Lakers suffered through the turnover bug in the second and third quarters, leading to their setback.
Mackinac Island led 12-8 after the first eight minutes before Put-in-Bay held a 23-9 advantage in the second and third quarters to build a 31-21 lead. The Lakers held a 10-8 margin in the last eight minutes to cut the final score to an eight point deficit.

Junior High Game
The Panthers defeated the Lakers 20-14 in a junior high game with members of the girls and boys teams.

Mackinac Island will next travel to Grand Marais for a Northern Lights League weekend series Friday, December 18, and Saturday, December 19.
