Flu Vaccine Doses Recalled in Area
The Luce, Mackinac, Alger, and Schoolcraft Health Department will return a total of 200 pediatric doses of the H1N1 flu vaccine to the manufacturer, following an announcement from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that the batches produced by Sanofi Pasteur are not as strong as required. Mark McCune, emergency preparedness coordinator for LMAS, said 100 batches each were sent to Mackinac and Schoolcraft counties, but none of them were administered.
The recalled doses were intended for children six months to three years old. There are no safety concerns with the recalled vaccines, Mr. McCune said, and the CDC is advising that children who have received the vaccine do not need another.
Mr. McCune told The St. Ignace News about 800,000 of the weaker pediatric doses were shipped nationwide, with Michigan receiving 17,200 of them.
Chippewa County did not receive any of the weakened batches of the vaccine and was unaffected by the recall.
