Disappointed in Trail Closures

To the Editor:

I’m writing this letter in regard to what I’ve been reading and hearing about what has happened to the National Forest trails in the U.P. and in particular to the Six Lakes area.

I was born in St. Ignace and lived there a number of years. After leaving, we came back often for the beauty of the area and friends. One of our favorite things to do was to ride down the trails, hoping to see deer, rabbits, squirrels, or any other animal (never did see a moose or bear).

Going back to Six Lakes was also fun. After I married, I brought my husband to the U.P. and he fell in love with it, also. As we had children and grandchildren, they, too, loved to come to the U.P.

Fishing at Six Lakes was their big highlight of the trip. They could fish off the bank or by boat. It didn’t matter if they caught anything; we all enjoyed the peace and quiet. What a disappointment to hear that the Forest Service cut beautiful, living trees across the trails and dug holes in the trails so as to stop people from enjoying the little things in life that still didn’t cost and arm and a leg, that you could still do as a family. Please consider what you have done, and fix it.
