Saints 6-1 On Season After
Wins Over Panthers, Hurons
The St. Ignace Saints improved to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Straits Area Conference (SAC) with victories over the Pickford Panthers 75-39 during a home non-conference contest Wednesday, December 16, and a road league decision over the Rogers City Hurons 85-29 Friday, December 18.

In Double Figures
Five players scored in double figures for Coach Dorene Ingalls as her Saints downed the visitors from Pickford.
"Everyone played well and this was a total team effort," said Coach Ingalls. "This group of girls work hard in practice and the effort carries over to the games with aggressive defense and unselfish offense."
St. Ignace totaled 24 assists against the Panthers and the defense held Pickford scoreless for the first 5:55 while taking a 23-7 lead after the first eight minutes. The Saints led 43-18 at halftime as Nicole Elmblad scored 12 and Grace Wheeler added 10.
Junior Nicole Elmblad (4), averaging 23 points per game this season for the Saints, scored 25 against the Rogers City Hurons Friday, December 18.
In the second half, the Saints outscored Pickford 32-18 that included 14-9 in the third quarter and 18-9 in the final eight minutes.

The Saints raced out to a 23-8 lead after the first eight minutes and outscored the Hurons 25-9 in the second quarter for a 48-17-halftime lead. They outscored Rogers City 37-12 in the second half to post the SAC win.

Points; Trojans Post First
Win of Season
Senior Jillian Collins scored a career high 30 points to lead the Cedarville Trojans to their first win of the season during a 51-42 home Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference decision over the Engadine Eagles Friday, December 18.
The players were asked to remember two team supporters at the game Friday, following the death of longtime fan Sharon Smith, one year to the day after the Trojans assistant coach Mary Beth Paquin died.
"This is an emotional date for our program," said Trojans Coach Sonja Duncan. "After losing Mary Beth and Sharon, I told the girls to play hard and remember these special ladies."
Collins, a top returning player for Coach Duncan, scored 26 second half points and 15 in the final eight minutes to spearhead the Trojans’ offense.

Engadine led 11-8 after the first eight minutes and held a 13-12- scoring edge in the second quarter for a 24-20-halftime lead.
Cedarville outscored the Eagles 31-18 in the second half, which included 13-8 in the third quarter and 18-10 in the final eight minutes.
"This was our best game played with high intensity level," added the coach. "We have a young team that will grow and improve with each practice and game."

Defeat Raiders The Pickford Panthers improved to 2-0 in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference and 3-3 overall after defeating the DeTour Raiders 58-35 in a league home game Friday, December 18.
"We continue to play hard and I was pleased with our defensive effort," said Panthers Coach Paul Griffin. "We have good practice habits and that has carried over to the game situation."

Eagles Drop Heartbreaker

The Engadine Eagles, suffering from fouls and poor free throw shooting, dropped a 50-49 non-conference road decision to the Newberry Indians Tuesday, December 15.
Zhan’e Nash, of Mackinac Island, scores two points against Maplewood Baptist Academy Tuesday, December 8.
"We are playing well, but need to be more disciplined," said Eagles Coach Dave McNeil. "Fouls hurt us and we shot poorly (9-20) from the free throw line, while Newberry made 19 of 28."
The Eagles led 14-12 after the first eight minutes and took a 24- 23 halftime margin after the Indians held an 11-10 scoring edge in the second quarter.
Newberry outscored Engadine 15-12 in the in the third quarter for a 38-36 advantage before the Eagles cut the final score to one point with a 14- 12 margin.

The Rudyard Bulldogs improved to 1-1 in the Straits Area Conference and 3- 3 overall with a 35-32 league road win over the Newberry Indians Thursday, December 17.
Newberry led 11-8 after the first eight minutes, but the Bulldogs held a 9-5 advantage in the second quarter for a 17-16 scoring edge at halftime.
The Indians took a 25-23 lead into the fourth quarter with a 9-6 margin in the third quarter before Rudyard outscored the Indians 12-7 in the final eight minutes to ice the win.

Bays Upend Raiders The Brimley Bays, 2-0 in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference and 5-0 overall, defeated the DeTour Raiders 42-21 during a home league contest Monday, December 14.
Brimley outscored DeTour in the four quarters that included a 10-1 margin after the first eight minutes and held a 5-4 scoring edge in the second quarter for a 15-5 halftime margin.
The Bays increased the advantage 26-11 with a 11-6 score in the third quarter and completed the contest with a 16-10 margin in the final eight minutes

Mackinac Island Girls Split With Grand Marais,
Down Ojibwe
The Mackinac Island Lakers girls basketball team split with Grand Marais during a road weekend series with the Polar Bears. The Lakers posted a 56-26 Northern Lights League (NLL) win Friday, December 18, but fell to the Polar Bears 49-47 in a non-conference contest Saturday, December 19. During a weekend series, the Friday game counts in the league standings and the Saturday contest is non-conference.

Four players scored in double figures for Coach Mary Patay Friday as the Lakers raced out to a 15-2 lead after the first eight minutes and held a 25-10 halftime margin after a 10-8-scoring edge in the second quarter. Mackinac Island, 3-0 in the NLL, outscored Grand Marais 31-16 in the second half.

Lakers Fall to Polar Bears
The Lakers, 4-2 overall on the season, led 14-8 after the first eight minutes Saturday morning before the Polar Bears took a 34- 14-halftime lead.
The Mackinac Island team played with more intensity in the second half and outscored Grand Marais 33-15, but fell two points short of sending the game into overtime.
