Mortensen Sets 3-point Record; Scores Career High 40 Points in Win

Connor McLeod Cedarville Connor McLeod Cedarville Senior Gerrit Mortensen set a new LaSalle High School record with 10 triples and scored a career high with 40 points to lift the St. Ignace Saints to a 62-46 Straits Area Conference (SAC) home win over the Rogers City Hurons Friday, December 18.

Mortensen broke the mark of nine treys that was set by Anthony Lester during the 2007-08 season against Newberry, and his previous career high was 35 in the Saints 85- 61 road non-league decision over the Pickford Panthers Tuesday, December 15.

Against the Hurons, the Saints’ sharp-shooting guard made 14 twopoint field goals and two free throws while knocking down one trey in the first quarter and three each in the final three quarters.

St. Ignace, 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in the SAC, took a 10-4 lead at the 2:51 mark of the first eight minutes before Rogers City scored nine consecutive points for a 13-10 lead, but Mortensen closed the quarter with his first three-point field goal to notch the score at 13.

Rogers City opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run for a 20-15 advantage before the Saints scored 15 unanswered points with Mortensen scoring 11 points for a 30-22-halftime margin.

The Saints increased their lead to 49-34 after three quarters with a 19- 14 advantage and completed the league match-up with a 13-12 scoring edge.

In Win Over Panthers

Chase Livingston DeTour Chase Livingston DeTour Senior Gerrit Mortensen scored 35 points that included six triples to lead the Saints over Pickford.

The Panthers led 23-16 after the first eight minutes before the Saints defense took control and outscored Pickford 69-38 during the final three quarters. The Saints held the Panthers’ leading scorer, Mckinley Portice, to 23 points. He had scored more than 30 points in his first two games.

St. Ignace took a 33-30 halftime lead with a 17-7 advantage in the second quarter and continued with a 30-15 margin in the third quarter. The Saints held a 22-16 scoring edge in the final eight minutes.

Saints JV Team Posts Wins

The St. Ignace Saints defeated the Rogers City Hurons 47-32 and the Pickford Panthers 62-36.

Bulldogs Post SAC Win

The Rudyard Bulldogs improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Straits Area Conference after a 73-60 road league win over the Newberry Indians Friday, December 18.

"We played hard and had a good second half," said Bulldogs Coach Grant Ross.

Newberry led 18-15 after the first eight minutes before Rudyard turned the tide with a 17-6 advantage for a 32-24-halftime margin.

The Bulldogs outscored the Indians 41-36 in the second half that included 20-13 in the third quarter and Newberry held a 23-21 scoring edge in the final eight minutes.

The Cedarville Trojans improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference after defeating Harbor Springs 70-62 in a home non-conference contest Tuesday, December 15, and traveled to Engadine and upended the Eagles 67-30 in a league match-up Thursday, December 17.

In Win Over Rams

Junior Connor McLeod, with 22 points, put together his best offensive performance of the season to lead the Trojans over the Rams.

Cedarville led 22-14 after the first eight minutes and held a 40-33 halftime advantage before holding a 30-29-scoring edge in the second half.

In Trojans Win Over Eagles

Ten players scored for Coach Dave Duncan as his Cedarville Trojans downed the host Engadine Eagles.

Cedarville led 21-8 after the first eight minutes and increased the margin to 45-17 at halftime with a 24-9 margin in the second quarter. Engadine completed the second half with a 22-13 margin.

Four Score In Double Figures

Four players scored in double figures for Coach Rob Anderson as his DeTour Raiders posted a 64-45 non-conference home win over the Brimley Bays Saturday, December 19. This is the first of three games against the Bays on the season, with the remaining two contests serving as Easter Upper Peninsula Conference match-ups.

The Raiders, 2- 1 on the season, led 23-12 after the first eight minutes and took a 36-26 halftime margin after the Bays held a 14-13 scoring edge in the second quarter and DeTour outscored Brimley 28-19 in the second half to record the win.

Senior Dylan Rye scored 21 points with seven triples to lead the Pickford Panthers to a 61-57 Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC) road win over the DeTour Raiders Thursday, December 17.

Pickford, 1-1 in the EUPC and 1- 3 overall, led 17-11 after the first eight minutes before DeTour outscored the Panthers 18-11 in the second quarter for a 29-28 scoring edge at halftime.

The Panthers bounced back for a 24-14 advantage in the third quarter for a 52-43 lead and hung on for the win as the Raiders completed the league contest with a 14-9 margin in the final eight minutes.

The Brimley Bays fell to the St. Basil Saints of Ontario in a home contest Tuesday, December 15.

The Bays trailed 40-23 at halftime before both teams scored 25 points in the second half.

Eagles Fall To Cougars

The Engadine Eagles dropped a non-conference road game to Superior Central 69-26 Monday, December 14.

The Eagles trailed 35-10 at halftime before the Cougars outscored Engadine 34-16 in the second half.
