Defeat Into Victory

Cedarville, with the youngest varsity basketball team in the area, recorded a 54-50 non-conference road win over the Posen Vikings Monday, December 21.

"Before the game, the team decided to dedicate the season to Sharon Smith [of Cedarville], who had passed away three days before," said Trojans Coach Sonja Duncan. "We shot poorly from the free throw line [6 for 15] in the first and I felt we could do better and we did."

The Vikings led 13-6 after the first eight minutes before the Trojans outscored Posen 34-20 in the combined second and third quarters for a 22-19-halftime lead and a 40-33 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

Posen did cut the final margin to four points with a 17-14-scoring edge in the final eight minutes, but Cedarville connected on 12 of 14 from the charity stripe in the second half. Jillian Collins, who led the Trojans 2-4 on the season with 21 points, made 11 of 12 from the free throw line in the final eight minutes.

With Win Over Wolverines

The Engadine Eagles’ losing streak came to an end with a 35-26 home non-conference win over the Mid Peninsula Wolverines Tuesday, December 22.

Engadine, 3-3 on the season, outscored Mid Peninsula 14-4 in the combined second quarter that led to the Eagles win.

Phillip Hood Engadine Phillip Hood Engadine The Wolverines held a 7-3-scoring edge in the first eight minutes before Engadine took a 17-11-halftime lead with the 10-point advantage in the second quarter.

Mid Peninsula cut the final margin to nine points with 11-10 and 9-8-scoring edges in the third and fourth quarters.

Eagles statistics: Morgan MacArthur, 12 points; Kacie Rutledge, nine points, six rebounds; Elisa Hobbs, six points; Kayla Miller, four points; Krista Metcalf, two points, four rebounds; Jessie Davis, two points.

"We continue to play hard, but at times the ball just doesn't fall through the hoop," said Eagles Coach Dave McNeil.

Eagles Fall to Rockets

The Engadine Eagles boys team dropped a 74-52 home non-conference decision to the Rapid River Rockets Monday, December 21.

Engadine, 0-4 on the season, held a 17-12 advantage in the third quarter to cut the Rockets lead to 53-37 before Rapid River closed out the game with a 21-15 margin in the final eight minutes.

Eagles statistics: Phillip Hood, 16 points, seven assists; Michael Klobucher, 12 points, five rebounds; Michael Ramelis and Luke Smith, six points; Johnny Mills, four points; Connor Frisch and Jacob Swider, two points.

Mackinaw City Girls Drop Pair

The Mackinaw City Comets fell to Alba 41-25 during a home contest Friday, December 18, and to Alanson 54-26 in a road match-up Wednesday, December 16.
