Audrey Dunlap

The Reverend Audrey M. Dunlap, 86, of Newberry, died Wed nesday morning, December 23, 2009, at the Luce County Annex in Newberry. She served several Upper Peninsula Methodist churches between 1976 and 2000.

Born July 26, 1923, in Hulbert, she was the daughter of Charles and Mildred (nee Myers) Massey.

She married Ivan C. Dunlap August 22, 1938.

For 11 years, Mrs. Dunlap was employed at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center in Newberry.

In 1964, she received a call to ministry and began her course of study for six years at the Garrett Evangelical Theological School in Evanston, Illinois, graduating in 1975. In 1976, she was appointed to serve the Engadine, McMillan, Germfask, Hulbert, and Grand Marais Methodist churches. In 1977, she was ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church by Bishop Edsel Ammons at the Adrian Annual Conference and continued to serve this appointment for nine years. She later was appointed director of God's Coun - try Cooperative Parish, where she was instrumental in its formation, covering seven churches while serving Engadine, Mc Millan, Germ fask, Hulbert, and Grand Marais in addition to serving as parish director.

She retired in 1985 but was called back to ministry in 1991, serving the Paradise-Hulbert churches for three years. She continued to serve part time at the surrounding parishes in times of need until 2000.

Her hobbies and interests in - cluded gardening, knitting, and crafts.

Rev. Dunlap is survived by four children and their families, Wayne and Lana Dunlap of McMillan, Gloria Van Hoose of Traverse City, Laurel Brungraber of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Marisa Lackey of Marquette; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister-inlaw, Ruth Massey of Newberry, and two dearest friends, Bob and Shirley Hokkanen of Newberry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Constance and Bonnie; her husband, Ivan, who died August 10, 1998, and three brothers, Philip, Samuel, and James Massey.

Friends may call at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in New berry Saturday, January 2, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. A service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with the Reverend Saundra J. Clark of the Newberry United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment will take place at the Hulbert Township Cemetery in the spring.

Memorials may be directed to the Newberry United Methodist Church.
