Vera Maddox

Vera M. Maddox, 88, of Mc- Millan, spent most of her working life as a clerk and later the postmaster at the McMillan Post Office. Mrs. Maddox died at the Luce County Annex in Newberry Saturday, December 26, 2009.

Born in Trout Lake March 21, 1921, she was a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (nee McCarey) Simmerman.

She married Nelson “Nels” Maddox September 9, 1939, and they made their home in the McMillan area.

She was employed at the McMillan Grocery Store before going to work at the post office, where she retired as postmaster in 1982 after 25 years of service.

Mrs. Maddox enjoyed cooking and baking, camping, fishing, quilting, and gardening, and was a staunch Tigers baseball fan. Mrs. Maddox was a member of the McMillan United Methodist Church and the Red Hatters Club.

She is survived by three children and their families, Larry and Kay Maddox of Newberry, Ronald Maddox of McMillan, and Barbara and "Ludy" Berry of Curtis; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are her siblings and their families, Wes and Joan Simmerman of McMillan; Ernest and Dina Simmerman of Midland, Marlin Simmerman of East Lansing, Gloria and Ernest Brown of Pontiac, and Katherine Mark of Highland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died December 4, 2000, her daughter, Judy, her sister, Eleanor Gardner, and two grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday, December 30, at 2 p.m. at the McMillan United Methodist Church in McMillan with the Reverend Paul Williams officiating. Friends may gather at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of services at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Columbus Township Cemetery in the spring.

Memorials may be made to the McMillan United Methodist Church.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family with arrangements.
