Guillard, Garries Are LaSalle Students of Month

Kevin Guillard and Katie Garries were named Students of the Month for December at LaSalle High School in St. Ignace.
Kevin Guillard
Senior Kevin Guillard is the son of Ken and Judi Guillard. He has a 3.7 grade point average based on a four-point scale. Throughout high school, he has taken a college preparatory curriculum. His current schedule includes Honors English, anatomy, calculus, advanced physical education, senior social studies, and physics. He helps Emily Fullerton as an aide in her physical education class. His favorite subject is history.
He was selected by the faculty last year to be a member of the National Honor Society. As a member of the society, he spent time this fall helping with the Red Cross Blood Drive and the Halloween community food drive. He has excelled earning various classroom awards during his high school years.

“Don Gustafson is my most influential teacher. He has a way of teaching that helps me remember things longer. You don’t memorize and forget, you learn and remember,” Mr. Guillard said.
He is also involved in athletics. He has earned varsity letters in track, cross country, and basketball. He is a starter on the basketball team. He ran one leg of the championship 1600-meter relay team that finished first in the 2009 MHSAA State Track Finals.
He enjoys fishing, hunting, kayaking, and playing paintball.
He plans to attend college next year, with interests in the medical field or engineering.

Senior Katie Garries has a 3.8 grade point average based on a four-point scale. Throughout high school, she has taken a college preparatory curriculum. Her current academic schedule includes honors English, anatomy, calculus, physics, and senior social studies. She is a student mentor for a fourth grade student. She also has a work experience assignment working in the physical therapy department in the St. Ignace hospital every day. Her favorite classes have been mathematics classes, especially calculus.
“Kip Wiersma has been my favorite teacher. While he is teaching you mathematics, he’s also teaching you life skills,” Miss Garries said.
She has earned various classroom academic awards, and has qualified each year for the end of the year LaSalle Academic Award. She has been continuously on the honor roll, and has been invited each year to the Just Desserts Academic Banquet. Last year she was nominated and selected by the faculty to be a member of the National Honor Society.
She is the captain, and a threeyear member of the varsity cheerleading team.
She has logged 68 hours of community service in various types of volunteer work and has spent time helping the team with fundraising efforts and cheerleading clinics for younger students.
She plans to attend Lake Superior State University and study nursing. She is the daughter of Brent and Crystal Garries.
