Ice Halts Mackinac Island Ferry Service

Ferry service between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island was halted Friday, January 8.

For more than one hour that day, Arnold Transit attempted to free the Huron from its berth at the St. Ignace dock, but the ice would not give way, said Bob Brown, Arnold's general manager. A combination of the low temperatures and the wind blowing heavy ice about 12 inches thick into the harbor have put a halt to boat operations.

"I'd like to keep going, but Mother Nature is telling me 'no," he said.

Boat operations could resume yet this winter, but this is not likely, said Mr. Brown.

Airplane travel to the Island is available from Great Lakes Air in St. Ignace.
