Saints Down Blue Devils, Cardinals in Dual Matches

Marie and Onaway opponents during the match Thursday, January 7. The St. Ignace Saints wrestling team improved to 13-6 in dual matches after a 54-27 decision over the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils and 51-16 win against the Onaway Cardinals, both Straits Area Conference opponents, at the St. Ignace Middle School Thursday, January 7.

"We had some tough matches that will make us a better wrestling team," said Saints Coach Harvey Bentley. "All the wrestlers had at least one victory and that says a lot for the quality of our athletes."

The Saints were led by Louie Radecki (130) and Rob Sayles (189) with 2-0 records and two pins. Cody Swagger (135), John Evashevski (140), Galloway Thurston (160), and Joey Ostman (171) were at 2-0 with one pin, and Richard Bentley (119) at 2-0.

Billy Bentgen (103), Dakota McLennan (112), and Dan St. Onge 1-1 had one pin and William Pechta (125) and Caleb Litzner (145) went 1-1.

In junior varsity matches, the Saints’ Joe Krause (130) and Brandon Marshall (119) pinned their opponents.

The Saints will host parent night against Straits Area Conference foes Rudyard, Mio, and Newberry Wednesday, January 13, and compete at the Sault Super Dual Saturday, January 16.

Evashevski Wins Weight Class;

Saints Place 4th at Escanaba

Senior John Evashevski won the 135-pound weight division with a 3-0 record and the Saints wrestling team placed fourth during the strong Escanaba Invitational Saturday, January 9.

The host Eskymos won the title with 251 points, followed by Iron Mountain with 222, Gladstone 185, St. Ignace 167, and Alpena 122 in the top five.
