Planners Learn Park May Not Be Answer to Development Challenge; Board Halts Survey
      Expanding an industrial park before developing a bicycle trail was a mistake, said Mary Ann Heidemann, one-time Economic Development Corporation (EDC) director for Presque Isle County. Now a land policy educator for Michigan State University Extension, Dr. Heidemann discussed economic development with the Mackinac County Planning Commission Thursday, January 7.

      A St. Ignace man living in Haiti was uninjured in the January 12 earthquake, and the school where he works is still standing, but he reports firsthand that conditions for people there are terrible, relief efforts are ongoing, and there is a strong need for donations to help people in the devastated country.

      Arts Dockside, an arts and crafts festival that has been hosted in St. Ignace for 32 years, will not disappear this year, owing to a decision by the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce to take over the organization of the Labor Day weekend show after the former Arts Dockside Committee resigned.

Event Hall Proposed on Mackinac Bay
Special Use Permit or Rezoning Needed for Clark Twp. Project
      Mike McMaken and Diane Patrick hope to build what they call a "celebration center" on two pieces of property on Mackinac Bay between Hessel and Cedarville, a project they say hinges on either the Clark Township Planning Commission granting a special use permit or the Clark Township Board rezoning the parcel as commercial property.

      City Council members decided at the Monday, January 18, meeting to narrow the search for a new St. Ignace police chief from the nine candidates interviewed to four finalists, and will review interview notes and application materials.

25 Volunteers Are Learning Skills, Challenges of Firefighting Job
Newcomers to Crews Include Recent High School Graduates
      In December, 24 men and one woman began an intensive program to become volunteer firefighters. From St. Ignace, Mackinaw City, Rudyard, Kinross, Bay Mills, Garfield Township, Brevort Township, and Bruce Township, communities from across the bridge and from Mackinac and Chippewa counties, the volunteers began the Firefighting Academy class in St.

U.P. Sulfide Mine Gets DEQ’s Final Approval; Opponents Will Appeal
      A U.P mining project that has pitted the promise of mining jobs against environmental concerns for the past five years is poised to go forward, now that the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has given its final approval to Kennecott Mine. The project to mine metal sulfide ore is proposed near Marquette, nine miles from Lake Superior.
