Walter Currie

Walter John Currie, 72, of Pickford, was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Mr. Currie passed away Tuesday morning, January 12, 2010, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born in Cheboygan, October 22, 1937, to Roy and Rose (nee Kush) Currie.

Mr. Currie was graduated from Cedarville High School and then went on to military service. He was a member of the St. Ignace VFW.

Affectionately known as “Uncle Walt” to many in the area, he was dearly loved by many, his friends said, and everyone enjoyed listening to him play his harmonica. Mr. Currie loved being outdoors, camping, spending time with his family, and reading. A special pet was his cat, KitKat.

He is survived by four sons, Pat, Tim, Chris, and Trevor Currie; two brothers and their families, LeRoy and Stella Currie and Gary and Nancy Currie, and a sister in-law, Dorothy Currie. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Currie was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Barbara Lee and Margaret Ann Currie, and a brother, Robert Currie.

A memorial was Saturday, January 16, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hessel Tribal Center.
