DeTour
Here are some of the planned events for the Saturday, February 27, DeTour Area Chamber of Commerce Winterfest: In addition to food vendors, indoor events will include a chili cook-off, brownie bake-off for both adults and youth, hot wing eating contest, youth pieeating contest, candy walk, games, and the elementary school king and queen crowning. Outdoors, participants will enjoy viewing the “Sweet Treat” snow people around the community, a frozen fish toss, snow golf, a hockey shoot, the walk, run, drive poker rally, and the always popular “Glazier Mountain” sledding hill and fire pit. Most of the activities will take place in and around the DeTour Village Hall. Chairperson Debbie Fountain and her committee are still working on additional events. If you are part of a group or organization that would like to host a fundraiser during Winterfest weekend, call Debbie at (906) 297- 5024.
The Friends of the Library are still collecting items for the silent auction Wednesday, February 10. If you would like to donate, call chairperson Sandy Wytiaz at (906) 297-6801.
Cornelia Miller is organizing a spring activity for the Friends of the Library. She would like to host a round table “folklore” discussion about DeTour Village and surrounding area. If you have memories of the area as it was in earlier times, or stories your parents and grandparents shared with you, please call Cornelia at (906) 297- 5561. The discussion will be taped, and DVDs will be available at the library and the DeTour Museum for viewing. The museum will also have some of the old photographs from our collection available at the round table to help the discussion. The museum taped interviews with some of our older residents many years ago, and those videos are also being transferred to DVDs for viewing. Unfortunately, the equipment used in taping these original videos was less sophisticated than what is now available, so the quality is not great but the content is wonderful.
The Les Cheneaux Snowmobile Club is conducting a membership drive. If you would like to become a member and support the efforts of this group as they maintain our local trails, call Stu Volkers, club president, at (906) 297-3060.
If you’ve been saving Cash for Schools labels, the next turn-in time is Sunday, February 28. Chairperson Sue Schultz will be getting our labels ready to go before that. If you have labels, please turn them in at the school or the Village Hall. If you haven’t been saving labels, please check all your items, even paper products, because many products have the yellow pencil on the label that represents the Cash for Schools program, and every label counts.
Congratulations to Carol Martin, Jean Bloom, and Denny Bailey, winners of the $500, $250, and $100 cash prizes, respectively, in the raffle to support the DeTour High School computer lab.
