Congratulations to Joe Freeman of Engadine, who recently became a great-grandfather, twice. His grandson, Michael, and wife, Deanna Cottle, had their first child, a daughter, Saundra Patricia Cottle, born Monday, January 4. Joe’s granddaughter, Meggan, and her husband, Raymond Morrison, had their third child, Ethan Wesley, born Sunday, January 24.

Engadine Consolidated Schools will host courtwarming Tuesday, February 2.

There will be no school for Engadine students Monday, February 8, for winter break, and also Tuesday, February 9, for a staff inservice day.

Condolences to the family of Madelene “Jackie” Sieling, formerly of Engadine, who passed away Saturday, January 16, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the home of her son, Andy. She will be laid to rest in the Engadine Cemetery in the spring. Jackie is survived by her children, Karen Hill, Andrea Linck, Pam Kleeman, Andy Laning, Gary Laning, and Jon Sieling. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Jean Salter, 65, of Engadine, passed away at her home Friday, January 22. She was a caring woman, who will be greatly missed by many. Please keep her husband, Eugene, family, and many friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Condolences also to the family of Charles Schroeder, 81, who was a resident of Naubinway for the past 20 years. Mr. Schroeder passed away Thursday, January 21. Please keep his wife, Jean, and their family in your prayers.

The fifth annual Valentine’s dinner dance will be Saturday, February 6, at 5 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Manistique. For tickets, or for more information, call Bob or Judi at (906) 341-6507 or Christi at (906) 286-3521.

There will be a free community meal Wednesday, January 27, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Engadine United Methodist Church at W13970 Park Street in Engadine. The Gibson's Siberian Express Kennel of Germfask will bring a team of dogs for all to see and visit.

Don't miss the 24th Annual Ice Fishing Derby Saturday, January 30, and Sunday, January 31, at Indian Lake in Manistique. Registration deadline is Saturday, January 30, at 9 a.m. Tickets are available at Top O'Lake Sport Shop.

The Curtis Winter Carnival is Saturday, February 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the ice in Curtis. Many events are planned, including the fabulous fireworks at dusk. The carnival is sponsored by the Curtis Area Chamber of Commerce.

Erickson Center for the Arts in Curtis announces its first North of 45 Retreat for Writers. The retreat is open to writers of any style, and will be held at Chamberlin's Ole Forest Inn, on the southeast shore of Big Manistique Lake in Curtis.
