Riders To Take on 250 Race Laps on Vintage Sleds
The Cedarville 2010 Blizzard Race Saturday, January 30, and Sunday, January 31, will run longer and offer more races than it did in its inaugural year in 2009.
"We're trying to give our spectators more bang for their buck," race coordinator Dan Autore said. Last year about 800 spectators enjoyed the race.
The event is comprised of 1975 vintage snowmobiles and older. Fivemember teams will race for 250 laps 50 more than last year - along a half-mile track at Taylor's Pit in Cedarville. The race is expected to take up to six hours to complete, compared to the approximately four hours of race time last year.
The track will consist of roughly a foot of groomed snow. As the race continues, bumps and grooves will form in the snow, creating natural obstacles.
"It'll tire out all five racers after 250 laps. I have no doubt about that," Mr. Autore said. "Keeping the sled and driver together can be quite a challenge."
Organizers may need to move snow onto the track this year because of the mild weather. About 350 truckloads of imported snow from the surrounding areas were used in last year's race.
Many racers drop out after 10 laps or so because of mechanical problems with the old sleds, he said.
Registration for the qualifying rounds is $250. Competitors race along the track for two laps as fast as they can to move on to the next race. Sledders can pay $20 more if they want to attempt the round again and improve their time. Qualification rounds are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, with the main race revving up Sunday at 11 a.m.
Snowmobilers may also preregister during the party at Cattails Cove in Cedarville from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, January 29. Awards for the main race will be distributed at Bumpa's Bar in Cedarville at 6 p.m. Sunday.
New race divisions, such as the Kitty Cat and 120 Mini-Z snowmobile race for children, Powderpuff race for women, and the George Huff Memorial race for sledders 45 and older will be offered. All of the races will be Saturday.
Children 12 and younger can participate in the kitty cat and 120 Mini-Z race, and will be divided into separate competitions based on experience. Young sledders will speed around a smaller track at Taylor's Pit. Registration is $10, with the race beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday. Mr. Autore plans to give a trophy to each child who competes.
The memorial race was spurred by George Huff of Cedarville, who was greatly interested in seeing an older division last year, Mr. Autore said, and the race was named after him. The powderpuff division was created after women told organizers they were interested in having their own race.
A junior sledding race for youth ages 12 to 17 is also available. The race lasts for 25 laps and costs $20 to enter. The Powderpuff and George Huff Memorial race are 50 laps. Entry fees for both races are $25. The races will begin after the Kitty Cat competitions end.
Trophies will be awarded to the top three places in the Powderpuff, Junior, and Memorial races. Powderpuff and Memorial race trophies will be presented at an awards party at the Islander Bar in Hessel. Registration for all four races will be Saturday.
