School Parking Lot Is ‘Snowmobile Row’

Perched on the hill just above Mackinac Island Public School and overlooking the Straits of Mackinac Tuesday, January 19, are student snowmobiles. In the winter, snowmobiles replace bicycles as the main source of transportation. Students ages 12 and older can drive their own snowmobile to school if they have completed the snowmobile safety class and earned a snowmobile operator certificate. A street-style sign marks the nearby parking area. For safety, the machines must stay about 50 feet from the school building.
