Saints Fall to Chiefs
In Showdown
St. Ignace and Cheboygan battled for 32 minutes before the Chiefs outlasted the Saints 75-70 in a Straits Area Conference (SAC) offensive showdown at LaSalle High School Friday, January 22.
Coach Barry Salter and his Chiefs, who are in first place in the SAC with a 5-0 mark and 8-1 overall, relied on balanced scoring with five players in double figures, while Coach Jason Marshall and his Saints fell to 6-3 on the season and 3-2 in the league.
Cheboygan jumped out to an 8- 2 lead as Jordan Spohn, who led the Chiefs with 22 points, 13 in the first quarter, scored the first eight points en route to a 26-16 advantage after the first eight minutes.
Gerrit Mortensen, who recorded a triple double for St. Ignace with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, scored 10 first-quarter points.
Jordan Baker Cedarville
During the opening period, the Chiefs’ Trevor Closs scored his 1,000th career point at the 2:27 mark. Both teams scored 12 points in the low scoring second quarter as Cheboygan took a 38-28 lead into halftime.
Austin St. Louis scored six points and Cole Christiansen added three to open the third quarter and cut the Cheboygan lead to 42-37 before the Chiefs outscored St. Ignace 18-6 during the final three minutes for a 60-43 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
The Chiefs opened the final quarter with a 6-3 margin for their largest lead of the game at 66-46 with 6:52 remaining in the game.
St. Ignace answered with a 10- 0 run as Austin St. Louis scored six and Evan Everson chipped in four to slice the Chiefs lead to 66- 56 at the 4:30 mark, but Cheboygan turned up its offense with a 9-3 score for a 75-59 lead with 2:10 left on the clock.
The Saints didn't quit and continued to play tough basketball, scoring the final 11 points of the game to cut the final margin to five points.

The St. Ignace Saints junior varsity fell to the Cheboygan Chiefs 64- 55 Friday, January 22.

Cedarville Defeats DeTour
In EUPC Match-up
Cedarville and DeTour battled in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC) match-up, with the Trojans snapping a twogame losing streak, their longest in more than four years, with a 56- 37 road win over the Raiders Thursday, January 21.
Second-half offense was the key as the Trojans turned a threepoint
halftime advantage into a 19-point victory.
DeTour, 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the league, held a 15-14-scoring edge in the first eight minutes before Cedarville, 4-0 in the EUPC and 8-3 on the season, took a 27- 24 halftime lead with a 13-9 margin in the second quarter.
The Trojans outscored the Raiders 29-13 in the second half that included 16-8 in the third quarter and completed the contest with a 13-5 advantage in the final eight minutes.

Five Score in Doubles
During Raiders Win
Five players scored in double figures to lead the DeTour Raiders to a 75-34 home non-conference win over the Mackinaw City Comets Tuesday, January 19.
The Raiders led 45-16 at halftime and outscored the Comets 28- 18 in the second half to record the win.

Trojans Fall to Swordsmen
Free throws played a key factor as the Cedarville Trojans fell to the Harbor Light Christian Swordsmen 54-47 Tuesday, January 19.
The Trojans made six of 14 from the free throw line, while the Swordsmen connected on 13 of 17, with eight coming in the final eight minutes.
The Swordsmen held a 10-8 scoring edge after the first eight minutes and took a 21-16 halftime margin after an 11-8 advantage in the second quarter.

Cedarville cut the Harbor Light lead to 37-34 after three quarters after a 18-16 score, but the Swordsmen completed the game with a 17-13 margin.

Senior Arik Hesselink scored his 1,000th career point to lead the Rudyard Bulldogs to a 71-43 Straits Area Conference (SAC) road win over the Rogers City Hurons Friday, January 22.

"Arik has been a big part of our program over the years. He and everyone else is playing well," said Bulldogs Coach Grant Ross. "Davin Salo and Scott Coffey have played key roles for this team. Davin keeps the team flowing well and Scott's rebounding is important to our success."
Rudyard remains one game behind Cheboygan in the SAC with a 4-1 record and has improved its overall record to 7-1.
The Bulldogs raced out to a 16- 6 lead after the first eight minutes of the game and held an 18-14- scoring edge in the second quarter for a 34-20-halftime advantage.
Rudyard increased the lead to 51-28 with a 17-8 margin in the third quarter and closed out the league contest with a 20- 15 score in the final eight minutes.

In Bulldogs Win
Senior Arik Hesselink scored career high 30 points, added nine rebounds, and blocked nine shots to lift the Rudyard Bulldogs to a 65-55 non-conference home win over the Manistique Emeralds Tuesday, January 19.
The Bulldogs took a 19-6 lead after the first eight minutes and held a 16-14-scoring edge in the second quarter for a 35-20-halftime margin.
Manistique cut the final score to 10 after outscoring Rudyard 35-30 in the second half.

To Down Bays
Ten players scored for Pickford and the Panthers outscored the Brimley Bays 52-29 in the combined second and third quarters en route to a 75-58 road Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference decision Thursday, January 21.
The Panthers, one game back of Cedarville in the league race with a 3-1 record and 5- 3 overall, led 19- 12 after the first eight minutes and outscored the Bays 29-10 in the second quarter for a 48-22-halftime lead.
Pickford continued their offensive advantage with a 23-19 edge in the third quarter for a 71-41 score before Brimley closed out the game with a 17-4 margin.
