The St. Ignace Saints girls basketball team started their fivegame road swing with a 70-26 non-league win over the Cedarville Trojans Wednesday, January 20, and a 64-18 Straits Area Conference (SAC) decision over the Cheboygan Chiefs Friday, January 22, to improve their record to 10-1 overall and 5- 0 in the league.

The next three road games for the Saints include Pickford Tuesday, January 26, Rudyard Thursday, January 28, and Manistique Wednesday, February 3, before returning home to play against Rogers City Friday, February 5.

The Saints breezed out to a 15- 0 lead during the first 3:30 of the game and held a 22-9 advantage at halftime before outscoring Cedarville 31-11 in the second half.

Returns to Floor

The Saints had their entire lineup on the court for the first time in several games during the SAC win over Cheboygan, winning their ninth consecutive game to improve their overall record to 10- 1 and 5-0 in the league. Two players injured early in the season, Katy LaTour and Emily Hepker, are back in the game.

"This was a good team win, especially with everyone playing," said Saints Coach Dorene Ingalls. "It was great to have the entire team ready to play."

Kharizma Labinski and Jillian Collins combined for 41 points to lift the Cedarville Trojans to a 67- 56 home Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference win over the DeTour Raiders Friday, January 22.

Cedarville took a 17-8 lead after the first eight minutes and outscored DeTour 21-15 in the second quarter for a 38-23-halftime lead.

The Trojans increased their margin to 53-34 with a 15-11 scoring edge in the third quarter before the Raiders held a 22-14 advantage in the final eight minutes.

The St. Ignace Saints junior varsity defeated the Cedarville Trojans 41-33 Wednesday, January 20.

With Win Over Brimley

The Pickford Panthers took over first place in the girls Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference (EUPC) with a 58-39 home win over the Brimley Bays Friday, January 22.

The key to the Panthers’ win was a strong man-to-man defense that lifted the offense and kept their EUPC record perfect at 4-0, while the Bays fell to 3-1.

"Our defense and rebounding was a key that allowed us to run. We worked hard in preparation for this game and the girls deserve all the credit," said Panthers Coach Paul Griffin. "We suffered a loss as senior Amanda Felty went down with a knee injury and will be out for the remainder of season."

Kayla Miller Engadine Kayla Miller Engadine Pickford led 11-7 after the first eight minutes and held a 24-17 margin at halftime, with a 13-10 scoring edge in the second quarter.

The Panthers outscored the Bays 34-22 in the second half, which included 16-11 in the third quarter for a 50-33 lead. The Panthers completed the league match-up with an 18-11 score in the final eight minutes.

Three Pickford players scored in double figures, while the Panthers defense didn't allow a Brimley player to score in double digits.

In Non-League Contest

Pickford didn't have long time to enjoy their win over Brimley, as the Panthers made the long trip to Lincoln/Alcona and defeated the Tigers 43-34 during a non-conference contest Saturday, January 23.

"It was a long trip and girls were tired, but they played well and pulled out the win," said Coach Griffin.

Pickford, 7-3 overall on the season, led 17-8 after the first eight minutes before the Tigers held a 11-7 scoring edge in the second quarter to cut the Panthers lead to 24-19 at halftime.

The Panthers outscored Lincoln/Alcona 19-15 in the second half to post the nine-point win.

Bays Roll To Win

The Brimley Bays rolled to a 76-32 non-conference road win over the Alanson Vikings Monday, January 18.

The Bays led 33-21 at halftime and outscored the Vikings 43-11 in the second half.

Eagles Improve to 7-4

After Win Over Black Bears

The Engadine Eagles improved to 7-4 on the season after a 55-44 home non-conference win over the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears Friday, January 22.

"We have been getting into foul trouble in the first half, so we played low key," said Eagles Coach Dave McNeil. "Overall, I was pleased with our effort, especially in the second half, and we had balanced scoring."

The Eagles held a 6-4-scoring edge after the first eight minutes and increased the margin to 15-10 at halftime with a 9-6 advantage in the second quarter.

Engadine took control in the second half, outscoring the Black Bears 40-34 to post the 11-point win.

Win Over DeTour

The Rudyard Bulldogs built a 13-point lead after three quarters, but had to hold off a fourth-quarter rally by the DeTour Raiders to post a 48-44 home non-conference win Monday, January 18.

The Bulldogs opened the contest with a 15-5 lead after the first eight minutes and held a 26-15- halftime advantage with an 11-10- scoring edge in the second quarter.

Rudyard increased their margin to 37-23 after three quarters before the Raiders outscored the Bulldogs 21-11, only to fall four points short.

Bulldogs Fall to Hurons

Senior Emily Jeffreys scored 30 points for Rudyard, but the effort wasn't enough as the visiting Rogers City Hurons handed the Bulldogs a 53-47 Straits Area Conference setback Thursday, January 21.

Rudyard, with a 5-5 overall record and a 2-3 record in the league, led 14-7 after the first eight minutes and held a 27-25 scoring edge at halftime after Rogers City cut the Bulldogs lead with a 18-13 advantage in the second quarter.

The Hurons outscored the Bulldogs 28-20 to complete the second-half comeback and register their first conference win of the season.

Bulldogs remaining statistics: Leah Jarvie, six points; Abbie LaPointe, five points; Crystal Brownlee, Rebecca Malaski, and Brittany Brown, two points.
