DeTour The big, beautiful snowflakes yesterday reminded me why I don’t leave DeTour for the entire season. Saturday, January 30, was a busy day for some of our young musicians. The Reed sisters, Hannah, Julie, and Sarah, and Nicole Melcer, accompanied by Jean Bloom, performed in the Solo and Ensemble District competition at Pickford. Congratulations and good luck to Sarah and Nicole, who were invited to participate in the state competition Saturday, March 27. The current week is a quiet one in DeTour Village, with only the school basketball games to keep us busy, however, there will be lots of activities and meetings next week. The DeTour Area Schools Board of Education will meet Monday, February 8, at 6:45 p.m. at the Raber Township Hall. Readings for the Fine Arts Council’s spring production of the “Foreigner” are scheduled for Sunday, February 7, and Monday, February 8, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Huron Street Inn. For more information, or a copy of the script, call director David Rhinard at (906) 297-5608. Interested performers will read short selections from the script for the director. Gestures and expression are encouraged. The monthly meeting of the Lower St. Mary’s Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is Tuesday, February 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Raider Room at the DeTour school. The group is getting closer to partnering with a deserving family from our area to help them build a home of their own. The annual meeting of the Fine Arts Council will be Wednesday, February 10, at 10 a.m. at the DeTour Village Hall. Everyone is invited to attend. If you are interested in learning more about the council, or perhaps taking a seat on the Board of Directors, or hearing about the renovation efforts for the Cultural Center, this is a good meeting to attend. Wednesday, February 10, is the annual silent auction of the DeTour Friends of the Library from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the library. The same day at Village Hall the DeTour Area Chamber of Commerce will meet at 7:30 p.m. Chamber members will discuss plans for Winterfest Saturday, February 27. Also on the agenda is the current membership drive and future promotion of our area. For more information, call Treasurer Gary Dudeck at (906) 297-2500. |
