(Baker family photograph) The lack of snow has been hard on those who like to snowmobile and cross-country ski. The ice seems to be holding, however, with the cold nighttime temperatures. Many snowmobilers and crosscountry skiers have been out on the ice this winter. The ice fishing has been spotty, fishermen have reported.

The Gala, a dinner/dance last winter to help Fund the Future for the school, was such a success that another one is planned for this winter, Saturday, March 6, at the Community Center, with a 5:30 p.m. cocktail hour and dinner at 6:30 p.m. There will be dancing and a silent auction. Cost is $50 per person.

Chris and Martin Tuckett of St. Ledger’s Island and Cedarville have just returned from an extended trip to Ohio and Illinois, where they visited friends and relatives.

It was nice to see Nancy Burke for a short visit after church Sunday, January 31. Nancy and her husband, Albie, have a summer home in Hessel. They are here to enjoy a bit of Les Cheneaux winter.

The Les Cheneaux Library is a busy place. There is a story hour Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. for young people. They usually read two books and do a craft. Last week 12 children and 10 adults took part. Volunteers are always needed for reading and supervision.

A program for young people is entitled “Meet Me at the Library.” Games are played, songs are sung, and all kinds of activities take place. There is a charge of $10 for this program. High school students are needed as mentors from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. This is a Michigan State University Extension 4-H program. Students who volunteer as a mentor will receive credit for community service. For more information, call Jane French at the library at (906) 484- 3547.

“Moulin Rouge” is the free movie that will be presented at the library Wednesday, February 10, at 1 p.m.

Lauren Izzard earned university honors December 23 for the fall semester at the University of Michigan. Lauren is the daughter of Ken and Joanna Izzard of Cedarville.

The “Cabin Fever Days” at Our Lady of the Snows Thursday, January 28, was well attended, with 26 women taking part. Participants brought all kinds of crafts to work on. The food was delicious, and it was an enjoyable time for all. The next Cabin Fever Day is Thursday, February 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hessel Presbyterian Church. One must bring a dish to pass; the ladies from the host church furnish dessert. For more information, call Margie DeNoyer at (906) 484-3863.
