Pickford Library Seeks Students for Youth Board
     The Friends of the Pickford Library seek Pickford students interested in becoming part of a Library Youth Board. Students must be in grades six through 12. Students will gain learning opportunities as well as leadership skills, organizers say, work in a group environment, and have the chance to voice ideas to improve the library.

      Dean O'Brien of St. Ignace and his teammates will get together in two weeks, skate out onto the ice of Moran Bay, and take on all challengers in the U.P. Pond Hockey Tournament. The difference in their appearance this year is that they will be wearing bright pink jerseys.

Mackinaw Area Historical Society Accepts Ice Tower Guesses
      As water has rained down on a tower-shaped framework in front of the Mackinaw City Village Hall, inch by inch the liquid has frozen over a mechanical timer inside. The device, embedded near the base of the tower and laid flat on the ice, will record the exact time it is released from its icy prison by the sun's warmth.

Rossi To Discuss Bird Migration at Rudyard Historical Society
      Paul Rossi, a naturalist and bird photographer, will speak about seasonal bird migration in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Thursday, February 11, at 7 p.m. at the Rudyard Historical Society meeting at the community center in Rudyard. Tracey Laitinen Is New Executive Director for United Way
      Tracey Laitinen is the new executive director for the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Her selection for the post was announced January 15. She succeeds Molly Paquin, who has accepted a position with VitalCare in Cheboygan. Ms. Laitinen was graduated from Lake Superior State University in 2002 with a Bachelor’s degree in biology.

Fire Committee Is Closer to New Contract
Deal Will Gauge Costs for St. Ignace, Moran Twp., St. Ignace Twp.
      A new fire protection agreement proposed among St. Ignace city and Moran and St. Ignace townships would put a slightly higher burden of the shared cost on the city and St. Ignace Township, while likely cutting Moran Township's current costs. The city and townships, which have not had a formal fire protection contract for more than 20 years, met to consider one Tuesday, January 19.

Regina Kemp of Kinross Hired as New St. Ignace Librarian
      Regina Kemp, currently a library clerk at Bayliss Public Library in Sault Ste. Marie, will start work as the head librarian in St. Ignace in February. She was hired by the city's library board Tuesday, January 26. Cindy Patten, who has been the librarian in St. Ignace for 20 years, will help train Mrs. Kemp when she arrives before leaving the position Friday, February 26.

Mackinaw City Community Supports Haiti Fundraiser
      The Mackinaw City community pulled together Saturday, January 30, to raise money for disaster relief for the people of Haiti. Audie's Restaurant hosted a spaghetti dinner organized by several community members. People arrived at the restaurant at 5 p.m., paying $6 for the meal. Local support was strong enough to fill half the seats in about 10 minutes.

      Nearly 500 adults and children gathered their fishing equipment and headed to Munuscong Bay to participate in the Soo Area Sports men's Club Walleye Jam boree from Wednesday, January 27, to Sunday, January 31.
