John D. Steel Jr., 74, of DeTour Village, owned a trucking business and also worked in logging. Mr. Steel died Monday morning, February 1, 2010, surrounded by his family at his home.

He was born in St. Ignace September 25, 1935, to John Steel, Sr. and Aldyth (nee Simmons) Steel.

Mr. Steel was graduated from DeTour High School, and entered military service during the Korean War. He was known as a hard worker, owning Steel and Sons Trucking business and doing government contracting work also with the logging business. He was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Through his devotion to his work, he made many friends.

He married Carol Parkins May 30, 1959, in Pickford.

Mr. Steel is survived by his wife, Carol; three sons and their families, Randy Milligan and Sandy Miller of Jacksonville, Arkansas, Michael and Sue Steel of Beulaville, North Carolina, and Eric Steel of DeTour Village; four grandchildren, Michelle, Ben, Patrick, and Rhianna, and three great-grandchildten, Andrew, Allison, and Alexander. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law and their families, Mark and Sharon Carney and Kenneth and Mary Jane Parkins, all of DeTour Village; one sister-in-law and her family, Donna and Jim Wellz of Tampa, Florida, and nieces and nephews Josh Carney, Terrie Milligan, Mag and Jake Buck of Juneau, Alaska, and Peter Scott Griffin of Mountainview, California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Aldyth Parkins, and his stepmother, Ellen Prout Steel.

Graveside services will be in the spring at Maple Grove Cemetery in DeTour Township.

Dodson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
