Captain Robert Carlyle Burchill, 86, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at Tranquility Assisted Living Facility in Frederick.
He was born September 28, 1923, on the family homestead in Rosedale, south of Sault Ste. Marie, to Robert S. and Elna Sundstrom Burchill. He grew up in the Eastern Upper Peninsula.
He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve from 1949 until he retired in 1983 as captain.
He was graduated from Sault Ste. Marie High school and then from Michigan State University in 1949. In addition to earning his bachelor’s degree, he was graduated from the ROTC.
He founded Burchill Antique Auto Parts in 1954, serving automobile enthusiasts until his retirement in 1999.
Captain Burchill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Harriett Burchill, of Frederick; a son and his family, Robert Hillier and Paulela Lutz Burchill of Jefferson, Maryland; a granddaughter, Rebecca Paige Burchill; two brothers, Dr. Weldon Burchill of Mason, and Kenneth Burchill of Bloomfield Hills, and many friends in the Sault Ste. Marie area.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Emily Elna Burchill, Ph.D..; and two sisters, Geraldine Burchill Martin and Virginia Burchill Dressler.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
