John Evashevski was named Most Valuable Wrestler in the lower weight divisions (103 to 140) and is the third LaSalle High School wrestler to win a weight class at the prestigious NMWC with a 4-0 record at 135. Nathan Gelder, at 171, placed first in 1994 and John Rickley, at 215, finished first in 1999. Evashevski defeated a wrestler from Kingsley 6-5 in overtime for the title.
Galloway Thurston Twenty-nine schools competed, with the host Blue Devils winning the title, followed by Escanaba, Rogers City, Ogemaw Heights, Iron Mountain, Roscommon, Mio, Kingsley, St. Ignace, and Pinconning in the top 10.
"This is one of the strongest meets we compete in with around 20 wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes," said Saints Coach Harvey Bentley. "Placing in the top 10 is good for this team and having three wrestlers finishing in the top three is outstanding."
Joe Ostman (171) finished
second with a 3-1 mark, upending the number two and three seeded wrestlers. Galloway Thurston (160) placed third with a 3-1 record, losing 6-5 in the tough semifinal match against an athlete from Ros- common. Placing eighth for the Saints were Dan St. Onge (152) and Robert Sayles (189) with 3-2 records and Billy Bentgen (103) at 2-2.
Rounding out the Saints teams are the following wrestlers and their records: Louie Radecki (130) went 2-2; Richard Bentley (119), Joe Krause (140), and Caleb Litzner (145) were 1-2; Dakota McLennan (103) and Dylan Brown (125) were 0-1.
