Lawrence Hillock

Lawrence “Larry” Hillock, 85, of Weimar, Texas, was a veteran of World War II who went on to a career in building construction. Mr. Hillock died Tuesday, February 2, 2010, in Weimar.

He was born June 18, 1924, in Dryburg, to Merrill and Valarie (nee Richards Poirier) Hillock of Pickford.

Mr. Hillock lived much of his life in Pickford, and was a graduate of Pickford High School. He worked for a short time in Pontiac at an auto plant, before enlisting in the United States Navy in March 1943, where he served in the Pacific Theater as a Seabee until being discharged in February 1946.

He married Muriel Robinson March 16, 1946, in Pickford, where they lived for several years.

Mr. Hillock’s first construction job was with Straits Construction of St. Ignace, and he worked for other construction companies before moving to Texas to continue working in that field. He operated his own home-building company for several years.

After retiring, he moved back to Pickford to assist in the care of his elderly mother. He also helped neighboring farmers, was a member of the Pickford Lions Club, and was the Pickford Township Supervisor for a few years before returning to Texas to be near his children and their families.

He is survived by his wife, Muriel; a son, Gary Hillock; three daughters, Jan Robbins, Karen Dornak, and Debbie Hajek, all of Texas; six grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother and his family, John and Clara Hillock of Pickford; two sisters and their families, Carol O'Connor of Georgetown, Texas, and Lorma and Lyle Ames of Tucson, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Joyce Hillock, of Mesa, Arizona, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard Hillock and Hartwell Hillock; a nephew, Michael Hillock, and a brother-in-law, Bernard O'Connor.

Hubbard Funeral Home in Weimar is assisting the family. Burial will be at a later date.
