Engadine Consolidated Schools

by Angie McArthur Superintendent

Congratulations to our Quiz Bowl Team, which placed second last week in Brimley. This is the best the team has done in the past seven years of Quiz Bowl. Those students involved are Elisa Hobbs, Leah Blanchard, David Fowell, Shelby Flatt, Joe Swider, Lynzee Bigelow, Philip Hood, and Kayla Miller. The students will compete in the next round of competition Saturday, March 6.

Special recognition is due to Kayla Miller and Michael Klobucher. These two outstanding students were selected as Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class D Scholar Athlete Finalists. Engadine High School was one of 13 schools in Michigan to have two finalists. Applicants must have at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a four point scale, and have previously won a letter in a varsity sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament. Finalists also must be active participants in other school and community activities and write an essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.

Last week, the kindergarten class went ice fishing at Millecoquin Lake. This special field trip was a culmination of weeks of studying fish, learning to measure, checking the weather, and many other science activities. The students had a great time, and even caught a few keepers.

Upcoming events include a fish fry Friday, February 19, sponsored by the Band Boosters. Please join us for a great fish dinner before the home game Friday night against the Pickford Panthers. This is also Parents’ Night for the boys’ team. Next week is Courtwarming. Students will participate in several activities throughout the week to build spirit. The girls play Superior Central February 25 (Parents’ Night), and the boys play NMC February 26 (Courtwarming).

Good luck to the bands as they compete in MSBOA Festival in Brimley Friday, February 26.

We continue to work on our school budget. There are several legislative bills and proposals in Lansing that will affect schools in Michigan. I urge you to continue to contact your legislators. Share with them the importance of education in Michigan. Even if you do not have students in our schools, the decisions being made will affect the future of Michigan. If you have questions or concerns about school funding or other school issues, give me a call.
