Skating Show Will Be Sunday in St. Ignace

Figure skaters from throughout Michigan and Canada will meet at Little Bear East Arena in St. Ignace Sunday, February 28, to display their skills to skating fans from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Ice Follies, now in its fifth year, will benefit the Mackinac County Child Protection Roundtable for Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention.

Many of the skaters are awardwinners from the Hiawatha Skating Club of Sault Ste. Marie, the Lake Superior Skating Club from Sault Ste. Marie and Canada, Alpine Edge Figure Skating Club from Gaylord, and Wildcat Skating Club from Alpena.

The featured skater is 12-yearold Madeleine Rutledge of Sault Ste. Marie, also the featured skater in 2009. Miss Rutledge began her career when she was three, when she started skating with the Hiawatha Skating Club. She wakes up at 5:45 a.m. twice a week to practice before school. Her regimen continues practicing after school the entire week. During the summer, she trains at the Detroit Skating Club with head coach Julie Berlin and choreographer Jodie Tasich, as well as training at the International Skating Center of Connecticut in June.

Miss Rutledge's skating accolades have piled up as she continues her training. In April 2009, she earned first in the Juvenile division at the Tri State Competition in Canton. In May, she took second place at the Ann Arbor Invitational, and was first at the Boston Open in June. She was also crowned Eastern Great Lakes Regional Champion of the Juvenile Age 12 and Under Division. She also advanced to the U.S. Junior National Championship for the second year in a row.

Advance tickets for the Ice Follies are $5 and tickets cost $6 at the event. Advance family tickets for up to eight people cost $20 in advance and $25 at the event. Tickets may be purchased at Little Bear East Arena, Central Savings Bank St. Ignace Branch, First National Bank branch near the Driftwood Restaurant, U.P. State Credit Union's St. Ignace and Cedarville branches, Bentley's B Cafe, the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce, the MSU Extension Office, and the D&D Mobil Mart in Engadine.
