Brevort

By Lois Movalson 292-5581

The Trinity Lutheran Church Council met Tuesday, February 23, at the church in Brevort. Charlie Lamoreaux was appointed to fill Ken Smith’s seat on the council. Joyce Gustafson was elected president and Charlie Lamoreaux was elected vice-president. Jerri Rose agreed to continue as secretary to the council. The congregations of both Zion Lutheran Church in St. Ignace and Trinity Lutheran Church in Brevort will vote Sunday, March 7, to extend a call to pastoral candidate Jeremy Winter to be pastor. Pastor George Kaiser has filled that position as interim pastor for the past 14 months.

WELCA will meet Thursday, March 4, at noon at Trinity in Brevort for a brown bag lunch. They will spend the afternoon wrapping new crowns for the midsummer pole.

Friday, March 5, will be the last of the Trinity luncheons. We will miss gathering at the fellowship hall. The luncheons were a welcome respite in a long winter.

Foxes seem to be quite prolific around the village. Kathy Reid and Bob Jarzynka had a large, beautiful fox at their back door this past week. Vern and Ruth Johnson observed a red fox in the area of the Brevort cemetery Sunday morning. Mark Spencer remarked that the wolves are chasing the coyotes and fox out of the woods, which may explain why there are so many sightings around town.

Mark Spencer, the younger, taught a trappers’ education course in Escanaba Saturday, February 27, with 20 young people and adults attending the class. Mark Spencer, the elder, is still taking care of coyote pelts.

The folks at the Rogers farm are preparing the sugar shack for boiling sap. The entire family, Jessie, Wilder, Jackie, and Jim, tapped the sugar maple trees. Happy birthday to Wilder Rogers March 1. Wilder is seven months old.

Larry First has been rabbit hunting. He reports the snow in the woods is up to his knees.

David Gonyeau, a former resident of Brevort, now living in Sault Ste. Marie, enjoys the camaraderie at A.J. Rogers’ place in Sault Ste. Marie, where the guys all wait for The St. Ignace News. The quickest reach gets to read the paper first. Dave Gonyeau moved to Brevort from the Detroit area when he was a young boy. His parents started the HH Ranch on the Mike Gustafson property. Dave learned the art of hunting and fishing from his neighbor, Dave Movalson, who was five years older than he. It was not unusual here to have Dave Gonyeau knocking on the door at 5 a.m., ready for the day’s adventure.

Happy birthday to Elva Nelson March 8, Michael Barthelemy March 10, and Morgan Gustafson March 16.

Enjoy the spring-like weather!
