Fishing Derby To Benefit Cedarville School This Weekend

Anglers will take to the waters of Les Cheneaux with their fishing shanties as they use their skills to win the Shanty Town Pike and Perch Fishing Derby Saturday, March 6, and Sunday, March 7. Prizes and cash awards will be given to the most skilled adult and youth anglers.

A Pike and Perch division will be offered, with prizes awarded to those who land the three longest fish. Adults can win up to $300 and a new shanty, while participants in the 12 and younger division can win up to $50. Tiebreakers will be decided by the weight of the fish and a coin flip.

Measuring will be at the tent on Musky Bay between the Les Cheneaux Islands from noon to 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Interested fishermen may pre-register at Les Cheneaux Community Schools, U.P. State Credit Union, and Cedar Pantry. Registration will also be held at the tent on the bay from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. Adult registration is $25, children 12 and younger is $10, while a family of up to four can register for $50.

A raffle for a power auger and portable shanty will be offered, along with drawings for cash prizes. Raffle tickets are one for $4, three for $10, 6 for $15, and 10 for $20. Prizes and results of special drawings will be announced Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Proceeds raised during the competition will benefit the Les Cheneaux Schools Fund the Future effort, which raises money to reduce the school district's deficit.
