Katherine "Katie" Baine, 90, of Newberry, died Wednesday February 24, 2010, at the Luce County Annex in Newberry, where she had resided since January 2005.

She was born April 26, 1919, in Newberry, to David and Maria (nee Luoma) Honkonen.

She was a 1937 graduate of Newberry High School. She was employed as a sales clerk at Rahilly's IGA for 48 years until her retirement in 1991.

Following her retirement, she married Larry Baine and spent her retirement years in Lake Odessa. Following her husband's death in 1997, Mrs. Baine moved back to Newberry and resided with her sister, Sally, at the family home.

Mrs. Baine was a longtime member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school. Her hobbies included baking and spending time at the family cottage on North Manistique Lake.

She is survived by her sister Selma "Sally" Hockstad of Newberry; two nephews and their families, David and Marcia Mahn of Newberry, and Charles and Doris Haapala of Naubinway; several great-nephews, great-nieces, greatgreat nephews, and great-greatnieces.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Baine was preceded in death by five siblings, Charles Honkonen, William Honkonen, Ida Honkonen, Laina Mahn, and Elma Haapala.

Friends called at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry Monday, March 1, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Services followed at 11 a.m. at the church with Pastor LaVonne Stephenson officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.
