Connie Paquin of the Rexton area reports seeing two robins in Evelyn Selby’s front yard this past week. Connie has spotted yellow and purple finches around her home. Thinking of Evelyn (nee Saunders) brings back memories of her sisters, Darlene and Avis, who worked at the Brevort Resort back in the late 1950s.

Small cakes of ice in Lake Michigan have been making their way west at a good pace. There is only a little ice left along the shore yet to pull away. The lake level is very low, and rocks line the beach where there once was sand.

We hear the crows calling to one another, and little green sprouts are peeking out in the flower beds.

Don Dickmann and Kathleen McKevitt of Laingsburg spent time at their condominium in Brevort. They are associated with Michigan State University. They are in part responsible for the Michigan Heritage award going to the Swedish-American community of Brevort. Don and Kathleen traveled to Rudyard to visit the Besteman maple syrup production company. Don and Kathleen accompanied Dave, Tracy, and me to the Rogers farm Sunday, March 14, to see their sugar shack. Unfortunately, the warm nights have not been good for maple sap flow so production has come to a standstill. Jim Rogers said in past years at this time they would have boiled off enough sap for 100 gallons of syrup; that is not the case this year.

Pastor George Kaiser has returned home from a three-week fishing expedition to Canada. He was successful in catching quite a few fish.

Lee Dyer is continuing to improve after his surgery for cancer.

It’s time to rake the yard and flowers beds. Mary Ann First has been working on her beds.

Russ Nesberg says he has been driving on the back trails and they’re clear of snow.

The Oswalds of Oswald Bear Ranch stopped by Jeannie’s Reach Cafe in Brevort this past Sunday with two sevenweek old bear cubs they got in Indiana. They weigh about 10 pounds and will squeal like baby pigs when you pick them up. Brian Rose said they will grab their handlers’ fingers with their mouths.

Congratulations to Tucker Shepard for placing first in his weight division at the wrestling regionals in St. Ignace Sunday, March 14.

Mike, Lara, Kristi, and Morgan Gustafson and Sharron and Larry Lasley attended the pee wee hockey finals in Escanaba this past weekend.

Dinner guests at our home Saturday evening, March 13, were Don Dickmann and Kathleen McKevitt. The evening’s entertainment included looking at old photographs of early life in Brevort.
